JAKARTA - Semarang State University (Unnes) supports the family of the late Iko Juliant Junior, a student at the Unnes Faculty of Law, including providing assistance if they decide to pursue legal action.

Unnes Rector Prof. S. Martono stated that his office had heard information on social media regarding the unusual circumstances surrounding Iko's death during the demonstrations in Central Java.

However, the university received initial information that he died in a traffic accident.

"The initial report was an accident, but rumors spread that the child was delirious, saying 'don't hit him.' Some also said there was something unnatural," he said in Semarang on Tuesday, as quoted by Antara.

However, he stated that Unnes was not following up on the issue because it was still just rumors and there had been no official report from the family regarding the unnaturalness of Iko's death.

"Of course, it all stems from the family. If the family reports that there was an unnatural cause (ed.) for my son's death, then we will help," he said.

Therefore, Martono encouraged the family to file an official complaint about Iko's death so the university could provide assistance.

"Once again, this is still a rumor. Unnes' stance is that we respect the latest report that the death was due to an accident. If other facts are discovered, we will help trace the student's death," he said.

Furthermore, he admitted to having received requests to investigate Iko's death, both from alumni and legal aid organizations.

"We will do anything as long as the news is credible, not just because it's rumored. We help not because of rumors, but because there is a genuine complaint. Parents complain, report it, or even report it to the Legal Aid Institute (LBH), the important thing is that it's in writing. We also have legal aid, and we will help," said Martono.

Previously, Iko Juliant, a Semarang resident and Unnes Law student, died on Sunday (August 31st) after receiving treatment at Dr. Kariadi General Hospital in Semarang.

According to police, Iko was involved in a traffic accident on Jalan Dr. Cipto Hospital, Semarang, but a friend of Iko's stated that the accident occurred in the Kalisari area.

Information circulating on social media suggested several irregularities, including the disappearance of Iko's personal belongings, such as his cell phone, alma mater jacket, and backpack, and the fact that his motorcycle was still being held by the Central Java Regional Police.

Another oddity arose from information from a security guard who reported to the family that Iko had been taken to Dr. Kariadi General Hospital by members of the Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob).

In a post circulating on social media, it was also stated that Iko's mother heard her son talking in his sleep and saying, "Please, sir, please, sir. Don't hit me anymore," before he was pronounced dead.
