JAKARTA - A forest and land fire (karhutla) has engulfed a five-hectare pine forest in Bukik Gunuang Ameh, Bukik Apik Hamlet, Baso District, Agam Regency, West Sumatra.

Ichwan Pratama Danda, Head of Emergency and Logistics for the Agam Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), stated that teams from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Task Force, the fire department, the National Police (Polri), the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), and the community were deployed to extinguish the fire.

The Agam Raya Protected Forest Management Unit (KPHL) also collaborated to extinguish the fire.

He explained that the team extinguished the fire manually, given the difficult-to-reach location and the remoteness of water sources.

The team faced challenges with equipment and supplies for extinguishing the forest and land fires.

"We are limited by equipment and supplies, so we are extinguishing the fire manually," he said in Lubuk Basung on Monday, as quoted by Antara.

He added that the fire in the Bukik Gunung Ameh pine forest, which burned around five hectares on Friday (August 29th), was due to the prolonged dry season.

As a result, the fire easily spread to other locations, and the village government reported the incident to the Agam Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) on Sunday evening (August 31st).

After receiving the report, the Agam BPBD deployed a task force and firefighters to the location.

"We are coordinating with the sub-district and village governments to handle the fire," he said.

The agreement reached by the field team and a joint meeting of the Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda) on Sunday (August 31st) stipulates that the sub-district head will meet directly with the leadership to determine the disaster status.
