JAKARTA - White House Press Secretary Krypt Leavitt said President Donald Trump was "unhappy" with Russia's attack on Ukraine with missiles and drones on Thursday, planning to discuss further on the matter.
Russia's attack on Ukraine killed at least 21 people and damaged a number of buildings, including EU facilities to foreign embassies.
"He's not happy with this news, but he's also not surprised. These are two countries that have been at war for a very long time," Leavitt said of President Trump.
He told reporters President Trump would make additional statements about the situation.
Leavitt said the Russian attack was deadly, while the Ukrainian attack had caused significant damage to Russian oil refineries in August.
He said President Trump wanted the war to end, but "may the two sides in this war not be ready to end it alone."
Russia attacked Ukraine with missiles and drones on Thursday, an attack that was deemed to have undermined President Trump's peace efforts.
The attack also hit the office of the Kyiv European Union delegation, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen revealing the delegation staff survived.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attack was on Turkish companies and the Azerbaijani embassy.
In England, Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack he said had damaged the British Council building.
Later, the European Union and Britain summoned the Russian envoy to protest. There were no reports of casualties in either location.
The attack comes less than two weeks after President Trump hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit in Alaska, a meeting that the US President hopes will advance peace efforts.
"Russia chose ballistics, instead of negotiating tables," President Zelensky wrote on social media X.
"Russia chose to continue killing, instead of ending the war," he said.
