JAKARTA - The Ministry of Immigration and Corrections (Kemenimipas) has written to the Jakarta Provincial Government regarding the planned relocation of Cipinang Prison (Lapas), East Jakarta.
"We have written to the Governor (Pramono Anung), because the Governor has several land assets in Tangerang and Bekasi, which are quite extensive," said Minister of Immigration and Corrections (MenImipas) Agus Andrianto in Cipinang Village, East Jakarta, on Wednesday.
He stated that the relocation is still under discussion as they are waiting to secure a larger plot of land from Cipinang, East Jakarta.
"There are no interested parties yet. The process is still ongoing, while we wait for that process, because no interested parties have yet emerged. So, we have written to the Governor," Agus said.
According to Agus, cooperation is needed between the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections and the regional government (Pemda) to utilize the land assets for prison development.
"If he (Governor Pramono) is interested in managing the 9.8 hectares of Cipinang land for economic activities in Jakarta, then if he agrees, for the same value, we will get a larger site so we can build a prison with adequate capacity," Agus explained.
Regarding the historical significance of Cipinang Prison, Agus said his office will leave it entirely to the Jakarta Provincial Government to determine its use.
"It's up to the Governor, whether it will be used as a heritage site or for something else, that's entirely the Governor's decision. However, we haven't received a response yet," Agus said.
Agus hopes his office will obtain a larger site than the current Cipinang Prison, which only occupies around 9.8 hectares.
Furthermore, Agus emphasized that the relocation plan does not include the Salemba Detention Center. The detention center in Central Jakarta will continue to operate at its old location.
"Prison centers must be located in the city center because they are not only entrusted to the police, but also to other law enforcement agencies, including the prosecutor's office," said Agus.
Previously, the Ministry of Housing and Settlements (PKP) established a task force to utilize correctional facility land for housing.
"President Prabowo's attention is extraordinary. Last night, I spoke for almost two hours with the Head of the Housing Task Force, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, and he also provided concrete details on how we can establish a task force to utilize correctional facility land for housing. That was his directive," said Minister of PKP Maruarar Sirait, also known as Ara, in Jakarta on Friday (May 9).
According to Ara, many prisons are located in strategic urban areas, such as Salemba and Cipinang in Jakarta.
Ara said that his office will hold another meeting regarding plans to build houses on prison land.
