BANTUL - The Bantul Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Yogyakarta Special Region, is responding to a large rockslide that hit a road barrier in the Piyungan Industrial Area, Srimulyo Village, Piyungan District.
Antoni Hutagaol, Head of Emergency, Logistics, and Equipment at the Bantul BPBD, stated that the landslide occurred on Wednesday, August 20, at around 4:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), after heavy rains in the area.
"From the assessment results, the rock structure on the hill is still cracked. If heavy rains continue, there is a possibility of another landslide," Antoni said when contacted by Antara in Bantul on Friday, August 22.
The rockslide was said to be approximately eight meters in diameter. Although no casualties were reported, the impact was quite devastating.
A 10-meter-long and 1.2-meter-high road barrier was severely damaged. Furthermore, the concrete road in the industrial area also suffered cracks. Losses are estimated at Rp 1 million.
Antoni explained that a resident was awakened by a loud rumbling sound when the incident occurred. Initially, the resident thought the sound was an earthquake. However, when the sun rose, they discovered that a large rock had fallen and hit the road fence.
To date, the giant rock remains at the location, blocking part of the road. Evacuation has not yet been carried out due to limited equipment.
"The village office will request assistance with heavy equipment from the relevant agencies. We have also coordinated with the Public Works Department for further handling," said Antoni.
Srimulyo Village Official, Reza Fajar Pratama, said residents and motorists are advised to exercise caution when passing through the area. Cracks in the rocks on the hill remain a threat.
"We have installed safety lines around the landslide site. We also urge residents and the village head to be vigilant, as conditions remain vulnerable," he said.
