French President Emmanuel Macron said US President Donald Trump said Ukraine should be involved in negotiations on regional land within any ceasefire agreement with Russia.
The statement is one of the first indications of the outcome of negotiations between Trump, European leaders, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ahead of the Trump-Vladimir Putin meeting on Friday, August 15.
Trump's insistence on involving Ukraine, if confirmed, could slightly relieve Ukraine and its allies.
They fear Trump and Putin could reach an agreement that sacrifices the security interests of Europe and Ukraine, as well as proposes division of Ukrainian territory.
Trump and Putin are scheduled to discuss how to end the conflict that has been going on for three and a half years, the biggest conflict in Europe since World War Two.
Trump said both sides had to exchange territory to end the fighting that had claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions of people.

On an intense diplomatic day, Zelenskyy flew to Berlin to attend a virtual meeting held by Germany with European leaders and then with Trump.
The Europeans fear the regional exchange could see Russia own nearly a fifth of Ukraine, which will be in exchange for its nearly 11-year efforts to seize Ukrainian territory, and encourage Putin to expand further to the west in the future.
"The second very clear point, as stated by President Trump, is that Ukrainian territory cannot be negotiated and will only be negotiated by the president of Ukraine," Macron said.
"Currently there is no serious regional exchange scheme," he continued.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Trump would prioritize ceasefire achievements on Friday.
Zelensky said there should be a meeting of three parties between himself, Putin, and Trump.
Merz said Ukraine was ready to negotiate on territorial issues, but "the legal recognition of Russia's occupation is non-disputable".
"If the United States is now trying to realize peace in Ukraine that protects the interests of Europe and Ukraine, it can rely on our full support for this effort," Merz told a news conference with Zelenskyy.
