JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto granted amnesty to six inmates of a gunless treason case from Papua. The granting of amnesty is called a symbol of the call for unity for all elements of the nation.
Minister of Law and Human Rights (Menkumham) Supratman Andi Agtas said this decision was taken as part of a humanitarian approach as well as the government's commitment to encouraging national reconciliation.
According to him, this step does not mean eliminating existing problems, but as an invitation to jointly resolve problems with the way of unity.
"That there is a problem, there is still a problem. Yes, there is a problem, but it's better let's unite. This is also a message to all people actually," Supratman said during an interview in Jakarta, Antara, Monday, August 4.
The six inmates who received the amnesty served sentences in various correctional institutions, with a criminal period of between two and five years.
They come from Papua and Ambon. Supratman said that the granting of this amnesty also shows the government's commitment to providing space for social recovery for residents who have undergone the legal process.
When reconfirmed on Tuesday, Supratman added that the total number of inmates who received amnesty from the President reached 1,178 people. Most of them are narcotics convicts, but there are also inmates with special needs, people with mental disorders, to the elderly over 70 years old.
Of these, six people are convicts of treason cases, four cases of insult to the head of state, and one person from other category of crime.
Amnesty was also given to national political figures, including the Secretary-General of the PDI-P DPP Hasto Kristiyanto. Hasto was previously sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison and a fine of Rp. 250 million, subsidiary to 3 months in prison for a bribery case related to the obstruction of the corruption case that dragged the suspect Harun Masiku.
