JAKARTA - Prime Minister Mark Carney on Wednesday announced his country's plans to recognize the Palestinian State, as part of implementing a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
In his post on social media PM Carney wrote, "Canada has long been committed to a two-state solution, an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state that coexists with the State of Israel in peace and security."
"Canada intends to recognize the Palestinian State at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025," PM Carney tweeted as quoted Thursday, July 31.
PM Carney told reporters the planned move was based on the Palestinian Authority's commitment to reform, including a commitment to fundamentally reform governance and to hold elections by 2026 where Hamas cannot play a role.

Canada has long stated that it will only recognize the Palestinian state once peace negotiations with Israel end.
However, PM Carney said the reality on the ground, including the hunger of citizens in Gaza, meant "the prospects of the Palestinian State are completely receding in front of our eyes."
Among the reasons, he said, was "an widespread threat of Hamas terrorism against Israel", accelerating settlement construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as well as a vote by Knesset calling for West Bank annexation.
"Canada condemns the fact that the Israeli government has allowed disasters to occur in Gaza," he said.
