MEDAN - Mount Sinabung in Karo Regency, North Sumatra experienced an eruption and spewed volcanic ash with a column height of 2,800 meters, according to officials from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG).

"The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity, leaning towards the east," said PVMBG Officer Muhammad Asrori as quoted by Antara, Friday, May 7.

According to him, the Sinabung eruption recorded on the seismogram had a maximum amplitude of 120 mm and lasted 5 minutes 56 seconds.

"Sinabung activity is still very high and there can be further eruptions and hot clouds at any time," he said.

Asrori appealed to residents whose areas were affected by the eruption of the Sinabung volcanic ash to wear masks to avoid respiratory problems.

According to the broadcast on the official PVMBG website, the current status of Mount Sinabung's volcanic activity is at Level IV (Caution).

PVMGB recommends that residents do not carry out activities in areas within a radius of three kilometers in the north-west sector, and four kilometers in the south-west sector and within seven kilometers in the south-southeast sector, six kilometers in the southeast-east sector, and four kilometers in the sector. north-east.

Residents who live along the river that has its head at Mount Sinabung are asked to be aware of the potential for lava flooding, especially during heavy rains.
