JAKARTA - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday urged President Volodymyr Zelensky to enforce an independent anti-corruption agency, while the Ukrainian leader signaled support laws could be passed within days.
"Ukraine has achieved many things on its way to Europe. Ukraine must build this solid foundation and defend its independent anti-corruption agency, which is the basis for Ukraine's rule of law," von der Leyen said in a post on X after a phone call with President Zelensky.
Following rare public criticism, President Zelensky on Thursday filed a bill to restore the independence of Ukraine's anti-corruption agency, reversing the direction of the previous draft law aimed at revoking their autonomy.
"I thank the European Commission for the expertise given," President Zelensky said in an upload on X after his Sunday phone call with von der Leyen.
"We have the same vision: it is important that this bill be passed immediately, at the earliest next week," he said.
