JAKARTA - The Directorate of Cyber Investigation of the Polda Metro Jaya revealed a case of manipulation of personal data through the illegal practice of selling cell phone SIM cards. In this case, four suspects were arrested, each with the initials IER (51), KK (62), F (46), and FRR (30).
Deputy Director of Cyber Investigation of Polda Metro Jaya, AKBP Fian Yunus, explained that this case stems from reports received by the public on Saturday, July 12. The information was then followed up through cyber patrols, until a LinkedIn account was found using someone else's identity.
From the results of the investigation, it was found that the perpetrator used the WhatsApp number 08773706xx to claim to be a member of the victim's family whose identity was misused. Further searches found two other numbers, namely 08572422xxxx and 08382281xx, which were also registered using other people's personal data.
Each suspect has a different role and modus operandi. The IER suspect used a number from a SIM card that had been registered with the identity of another person to create a WhatsApp account, then sent a message claiming to be a relative of the victim. Meanwhile, the KK suspect, who owns a cellphone counter, sells registered SIM cards because he is more in demand by customers.
Suspect F acts as a registered SIM card provider for the KK, because many counter owners ordered this type. He obtained a card from the suspect FRR, who was tasked with collecting data on someone else's Population Identification Number (NIK) and Family Card (KK). The data was obtained through a Google search engine and used to register a SIM card which was then sold.
FRR also sent a data collection of NIK and KK to suspect F, in exchange for Rp. 50,000 for each 100 data sent.
During the raid, the police confiscated five cell phones, 154 registered SIM cards, one CPU unit, and a number of proof of payment.
