Poso Rocked By Earthquake, Hundreds Of Houses Damaged And 2,011 Refugees

JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted that as many as 2,011 residents fled after an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 rocked the Poso Regency, Central Sulawesi, on Thursday, July 24 evening.

"Temporary data as many as 609 heads of families or 2,011 people are displaced," said Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, in Jakarta, Antara, Friday, July 25.

In addition to causing thousands of residents to evacuate, the earthquake also resulted in four minor injuries. Currently, the victims are still undergoing medical treatment.

In terms of infrastructure, BNPB noted that at least 14 houses were severely damaged and 21 other houses were lightly damaged. One unit of educational facilities and one unit of houses of worship were also reported to have suffered minor damage. This damage is spread across Tokilo and Tindoli villages, Southeast Pamona sub-districts, as well as Pendolo Village, South Pamona District.

"The data collection process is still ongoing," said Abdul.

Previously, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the main earthquake occurred on Thursday, July 24 at 20.06 WIB. The epicenter of the earthquake was on land, precisely in the Poso area, at a depth of 10 kilometers at coordinates 2.01 degrees south latitude and 120.78 degrees east longitude.

The BMKG explained that the earthquake was classified as shallow and triggered by active fault activity in the Poso Fault zone, with a sliding mechanism (strike-slip).

After the main earthquake, there were 11 aftershocks. The largest magnitude reached 5.5, while the smallest was recorded at 2.4.

Guncangan gempa dilaporkan cukup kuat dan dirasakan di sejumlah wilayah. Di Poso, Kolonodale, dan Mangkontana, intensitas guncangan mencapai skala IVV MMI, atau dirasakan oleh hampir seluruh penduduk. Di wilayah Palopo, Toraja, Mappadeceng, dan Bungku tercatat skala IIIIV MMI. Sementara itu, di Palu, getaran dirasakan dengan skala IIII MMI.

Meski cukup kuat, BMKG memastikan bahwa gempa tersebut tidak berpotensi tsunami. Masyarakat diminta tetap tenang dan tidak terpancing informasi yang belum terverifikasi.

Even though it is quite strong, BMKG ensures that the earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami. The public is asked to remain calm and not be provoked by unverified information.
