JAKARTA - Moscow hopes Israel does not annex the West Bank as agreed by its parliament, warning it will only worsen the situation in the already strained region, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"Moscow hopes the declaration will not result in concrete actions by the Israeli government aimed at implementing it in real terms," the statement read, quoted by TASS July 25.
"If not, these actions will certainly lead to an escalation of further tensions, whose consequences - both for Israel and the rest of the Middle East - are difficult to predict," the ministry added.
Russia's foreign policy agency also pointed out Moscow did not approve of Israel's declaration of the West Bank.
"Moscow is very negative for the steps taken by Israeli lawmakers. In fact, it determines the outcome of negotiations regarding the final status of the Palestinian territories and contradicts Israel's obligations based on Oslo Process, as well as related resolutions from the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council," the statement said.
As previously reported, Knesset (Israeli parliament) approved a non-binding motion that supports West Bank annexation in a vote held on Wednesday.
The resolution, which was passed 71-13 votes, states the West Bank is an "indivisible part of Israel's land, the country's historical, cultural, and spiritual homeland of Jews" and that "Israel has natural, historical and legal rights over all territory of the Land of Israel."
