JAKARTA - TNI Commander Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto and Chief of Staff of TNI Admiral Yudo Margono explained the chronology of the sinking of KRI Nanggala-402 in Bali waters.

The explanation of the KRI Nanggala-402 submarine incident was presented in a joint meeting with the House of Representatives of Commission I to discuss defense.

In the work meeting, there were three agendas discussed, namely an explanation of the sinking of the KRI Nanggala-402 submarine, the current condition of the Indonesian Navy's weapons system, and plans to modernize the weapon system, especially submarines.

However, the discussion session regarding the condition of defense equipment and the modernization of defense equipment, including the TNI (Indonesian Navy) submarines, took place in a closed manner.

TNI Commander Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto said now is the right time to evaluate the condition of the TNI's defense equipment. In particular, the submarines that are owned by the Indonesian Navy, and the steps that will be taken to continue the modernization of the submarines. After the incident, the KRI Nanggala-402 sank in the waters north of Bali Island during a missile and torpedo firing exercise.

In the meeting, Admiral TNI Yudo Margono explained the chronology of the sinking of KRI Nanggala-402. Including rescue actions, assistance from friendly countries, as well as a history of maintenance and repair of the submarine.

According to him, the part of KRI Nanggala-402, namely the periscope and identification lights, could still be seen from the sea raider tracking ship belonging to the Indonesian Navy's Frog Troop Command at 03.00 WITA, April 21, 2021.

"Within a distance of 50 meters, they could see firsthand the night condition of the KRI Nanggala-402 dive at that time (before diving to the depths, ed)", said Yudo.

However, he continued, at 05.00 WITA, April 21, the KRI Nanggala-402 did not appear and communication with the ship broke down until he ordered his ranks to search.

"There were around 21 KRIs at the same time during the exercise and there were KRIs that had sonar so they could immediately search. The search process will take time from April 21-25, where on April 24 at 15.00 WITA, KRI Nanggala-402 is declared subsunk”, he said.

"We reported to the President about this incident. We convey that we Kasal are responsible for this incident”, added Yudo.
