Mexican President Confused US Plans To Sanction Aviation Sector

JAKARTA - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the United States had not officially notified her government of possible actions against Mexico's aviation sector. Claudia insists she sees no reason for the neighboring country to start the sanctions.

The statement comes after the US Department of Transportation said on Saturday it would take action in response to Mexico's decision to reduce flight slots and force cargo airlines to relocate operations in Mexico City, which has an impact on US airlines.

"There is no reason for Mexico to accept any sanctions for changes made to the capital's airport system," Sheinbaum said in a daily press conference.

The US Minister of Transportation, Sean Total, said it could reject new flight requests from Mexican airlines if concerns over airport decisions made in 2022 and 2023 are not handled.

The department will propose the lifting of antitrust immunity given to Delta Air Lines for its joint venture with Aeromexico to address competition issues.
