JAKARTA - A Japanese non-governmental organization (NGO) that offers support and counseling for victims of online sexual exploitation has removed about 67,000 explicit photos and videos over the past six years, the group said on Wednesday.
Non-profit organizations for Pornography Victims and Sexual Exploitation (ORS) encourage victims to seek help so that photos and videos are removed, because the process of asking for the removal alone can cause trauma.
The organization asked website operators and providers to remove a total of 99,266 sexually explicit photos and videos between the 2019 and 2024 fiscal years, quoted from Kyodo News July 16.
Of these, 59,653 have been completely removed from the internet, while 7,577 have been removed from several sites where photos and videos were uploaded.
As of May this year, a total of 30,625 photos and videos are still online, as some site operators do not respond to request for removal, the group said.
The group is developing a system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to identify images or videos that display someone asking for help. Even if a file is uploaded on multiple websites, AI can find and help request its removal.
The group also uses AI to confirm whether a file has been deleted.
Most of the explicit sexual content involves women appearing on adult sites specifically for members whose videos leaked to other websites, the group said.

There is also a case of revenge pornography, where ex-partners uploaded dangerous images shared while they were still together.
Some are victims of sextortion, where perpetrators who have explicit images extort the target of getting money with threats will be released online.
The group said recently they were also contacted by people whose photos were used in deepfake pornography. In such cases, explicit images or videos made by AI are uploaded online without consent.
