JAKARTA - Russian intelligence chief Sergey Naryshkin and the United States John Radcliffe agreed to call each other at any time after the conversation between the two, according to a statement published on Sunday.

Russia's Foreign Intelligence Agency (SVR), the successor to the First Chief Directorate KGB, and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) have long been competing fiercely, using a public campaign to recruit agents after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Director of SVR Naryshkin told Kremlin state television reporter Pavel Zarubin he had called Radcliffe from the CIA and agreed to call each other to discuss interesting issues.

"I've been calling with my American partners and we're giving each other the opportunity to call each other at any time and discuss issues of interest to us," Naryshkin told Zarubin.

According to Russian media, Naryshkin's last phone call with the CIA director took place in March 2025.

The SVR press office at the time reported that during their telephone conversation, both sides reached an agreement "to maintain regular contact between SVR and CIA directors with the aim of facilitating international stability and security as well as reducing confrontations in relations between Moscow and Washington," as quoted by TASS.

The call follows a phone call by President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin in February to ease tensions between Washington and Moscow, which have escalated in the past year. SVR and its predecessors have handled several of the most destructive agents in US history, including Julius Rosenberg, who helped the Soviet Union acquire nuclear secrets, and spy Robert Hanssen and koordinators who leaked thousands of US secrets.
