Geological Agency: Mount Raung Status Still Alert

JEMBER - Head of the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Muhammad Wafid said that Mount Raung activities in East Java are still in alert status or Level II, even though the eruption activity continues.

Mount Raung is located on the border of Banyuwangi, Bondowoso and Jember regencies, having a height of 3,332 meters above sea level (masl).

"The eruption material of Mount Raung from 5 to 19 June 2025 is dominant for ash-sized materials and the distribution is mostly limited around the crater so that it does not cause changes in the threat of danger," said Muhammad Wafid as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, June 20.

According to him, the seismic activity of Mount Raung in the period 16-18 June 2025 consisted of 5 eruption/eruption earthquakes, 11 gusts, 1 low frequency earthquake, 11 distant tectonic earthquakes, and continuous tremors with an amplitude of 0.5-4 mm, dominant 1 mm.

Earthquake energy observations in the same period fluctuate and observed patterns rise at the end of the observation period but are not gradual, suggesting currently there is no supply of fluid with a large intensity from below the surface as low frequency earthquakes are low.

"The level of activity is considered still relevant at Level II (Alert) with recommendations not to move at a radius of 3 km from the crater/peak," he said.

In connection with the volcanic activity of Mount Raung, he continued, the community must comply with the recommendations issued by the Geological Agency through the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation, and not be provoked by untrue and irresponsible news regarding G. Raung's activities.

"We urge the public to follow the directions of the competent authorities, namely the Geological Agency which will continue to coordinate with BNPB, BMKG, local governments, and other relevant agencies," he said.

Mount Raung is one of the active volcanoes that has been at the Level II (alert) activity level since December 19, 2023.
