JAKARTA - Commission I of the DPR ensures that it will accelerate the discussion of the revision of Law Number 32 of 2002 concerning Broadcasting. This scarcity follows the rapid development of digital media and platforms over the top (OTT), such as YouTube, Netflix, and TikTok.
Member of Commission I of the House of Representatives, Nurul Arifin, stated that the current Broadcasting Law is no longer relevant to regulate digital content. Therefore, the DPR targets this revision to be completed immediately in order to be able to answer the current challenges of the media ecosystem.
"We want this law to be completed quickly. We will also soon invite big digital platforms, such as YouTube, Netflix, and TikTok to find agreements that can be included in the revision of the Broadcasting Law," he said.
This was conveyed by Nurul at the "Forum of the Red Talks Government: The Role of the State Guarantees the Justice of the Media Ecosystem" at the office of Antara, Central Jakarta, Thursday, June 19.
According to Nurul, the difference in definitions between conventional broadcasting and digital content is a legal loophole that must be closed immediately. The new law is expected to be able to regulate the distribution of digital content fairly and responsibly, without hindering innovation.
"The media is currently in an alarming situation. So this revision is homework that must be completed by the DPR immediately," added Nurul.
The revision of the Broadcasting Law has actually begun to be discussed since 2012 and has entered the DPR's National Legislation Program for the 2019-2024 period. However, the draft has drawn criticism, especially in the article proposing the prohibition of investigative journalism on television, until it is finally delayed.
