Penajam Fishermen Asked To Beware Of High Waves During Drought

PPU - Fishermen in North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan Province, are asked to be aware of high waves during the dry season which is predicted to be accompanied by strong winds from the south which have the potential to cause high waves in the local waters.

"We continue to monitor weather conditions and cooperate with relevant agencies," said Head of the BPBD Regional Disaster Management Agency of North Penajam Paser Regency Muhammad Sukadi Kuncoro when asked about BMKG predictions in Penajam, Antara, Sunday, July 15.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that the dry season will occur in the East Kalimantan region from late June to August 2025, accompanied by strong winds from the south that have the potential to cause high waves in the waters.

"We will disseminate early warnings to coastal communities and other marine activity actors," he said.

BMKG predicts that the south wind is expected to last during the dry season, he continued, starting from June to August it could even spread until October 2025.

This condition risks shipping activities, especially for fishermen operating in the high seas, and fishermen are asked to be more alert to the potential for high waves.

Fishermen and other marine activity actors are advised to actively monitor weather forecast information released by BMKG through official channels such as websites and mobile applications.

This information can be the basis for decision making regarding a safe schedule and fishing area, he explained, because high waves can endanger small boats, especially those belonging to traditional fishermen.

BPBD Penajam Paser Utara Regency also reminded fishermen and other marine activity actors to pay attention to safety aspects before going to sea, including preparing emergency equipment such as life vests.

"We also urge you to use buoys when going to sea, because it is important for personal safety if something unexpected happens," he said.

"People on the coast are also reminded to be aware of the potential for high waves and strong winds that can occur during the dry season," said Muhammad Sukadi Kuncoro.
