JAKARTA - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has encouraged the strengthening of cooperation between the Group of Developed Countries (G7) and non-member countries, although he cannot attend the 51st G7 Summit in Alberta, Canada, next week.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said President Prabowo received an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to attend the "Outreach" Session of the G7 Summit which is scheduled to be held on June 17.

"The law shows that Indonesia is considered important, has significance in the current global arena. Invitations issued by G7 to non-members are usually limited," said Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Rolliansyah Soemirat in a press statement, Thursday, June 12.

The diplomat, who is familiarly called Roy, said that apart from Indonesia, there were also other non-member countries that were invited to the same session.

However, President Prabowo could not fulfill the invitation because he had a commitment and agenda meeting in Singapore and Russia which was held in the near future with the G7 Summit.

Although he could not attend, President Prabowo expressed support for the implementation of the G-7 Summit when making phone calls with Canadian PM Carney.

"Indonesia continues to encourage the strengthening of various collaborations between the G7 and non-G7 countries, particularly related to global challenges," Roy explained of one of the things President Prabowo said during a phone call with PM Carney.

"We haven't heard from the inviteers, whether it will be represented or not, depending on the inviteer," he said.

It is known that President Prabowo is scheduled to make a visit to Singapore on June 16. After that, he will fly to Russia to hold a bilateral meeting with President Vladimir Putin and make a speech at the 28th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on a series of working visits June 18-20.
