JAKARTA - Chairman of the PDIP Perjuangan (PDIP) DPP Djarot Saiful Hidayat responded to President Prabowo Subianto's statement that he would open diplomatic relations with Israel if he stopped colonialism of Palestine.

Djarot asked the government not to rashly recognize Israel by giving conditions if Palestine is independent.

"If we always fight for the independence of Palestine, and now Palestine is still colonized, then Palestine must be independent first. For example, for us to open diplomatic relations with Israel, don't rush too much, yes," Djarot told reporters, Sunday, June 1.

Djarot emphasized that the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution mandates that independence is the right of all nations and colonialism must be abolished.

Thus, the government is asked not to take the discourse of recognizing Israel as long as Palestine is still colonized and genocide attacks in Gaza are still taking place.

"So if we make diplomatic relations first, as long as Palestine is still the colonized nation. We can't. Because it's against the Basic Law," said Djarot.

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto emphasized Indonesia's stance on Palestinian independence when delivering a joint statement with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday, May 28.

The two-state solution is supported by Indonesia to create peace between Palestine and Israel.

"In various places, in various forums, I convey Indonesia's attitude that Indonesia views only the completion of the two state solution," said Prabowo.

"Freedom for the Palestinian people is the only way to achieve true peace," he added.

In addition, the Head of State also stated that Indonesia and France support independent Palestinians and urged the Israeli military to immediately stop its military operations in Gaza.

"One of the most important things in my discussion with President Macron is what President Macron said about France's will to encourage a peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue," Prabowo explained.
