JAKARTA - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday he had spoken by telephone with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, discussing joint measures and the need to put pressure on Russia to secure "fair peace".

"It is important that all decisions are coordinated. Then sanctions will work. Without pressure on Moscow, fair peace cannot be achieved. Everyone understands this," President Zelensky said in a post on Telegram.

Ukrainian leaders have been contacting European allies in the past two days to seek more pressure on Russia, after US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone on Monday.

For Ukraine and its allies, who spent months trying to win the Trump Administration over for their purposes in the war started by Russia, the US Leader's phone call with President Putin put them back to a starting point.

The US president withdrew previous pressure on an unconditional ceasefire for 30 days which is expected to start what was promised as a long and winding peace negotiations.

President Trump also hinted that the war he promised would end in 24 hours is no longer his business to fix - a message that makes Ukraine vulnerable and worries its allies.
