JAKARTA - United States President Donald Trump said his phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday went very well, with Moscow and Kyiv about to start negotiations towards a ceasefire and end the war.
"The negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will begin soon," President Trump said in a Truth Social post after a phone call with Putin, which lasted for two hours.
President Trump said, "the tone and spirit of conversation (with Putin) is very good," and that Russia wants to trade "large-scale" with the US after the war ends.
He added that Ukraine will also benefit from trade "in the process of rebuilding its country."
Last week, Russian and Ukrainian delegates met in person for the first time since 2022, in Istanbul to hold peace talks despite failing to agree to a ceasefire.
Kyiv said it was ready for a ceasefire now, while Moscow said the terms must be met first.
President Trump said that after having talks with President Putin, he made a joint phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as well as EU leaders, France, Italy, Germany and Finland.
President Trump told the leaders that negotiations would begin soon, he said.
