TB Hasanuddin: Ammunition Destruction Must Be Evaluated After Explosion In Garut

Member of Commission I DPR RI, Tubagus Hasanuddin, or TB Hasanuddin, stated that the ammunition destruction procedure must be evaluated after the tragic explosion that occurred during the destruction of ammunition in Cibalong, Garut Regency, West Java, which killed dozens of people, Monday, May 12.

According to Hasanuddin, this incident should be a serious lesson for the authorities in carrying out the destruction of ammunition. He also expressed his deep condolences for the death of the explosion victim.

"My deepest condolences. May the victims get the best place by God Almighty," Hasanuddin said in Jakarta, Monday, May 12.

Hasanuddin considered that in terms of location, the detonation site in the coastal area was actually safe and in accordance with the provisions. However, he stressed that the public should not be able to access the area.

In the future, he requested that regional restrictions be carried out with stricter supervision to prevent civilians from entering dangerous areas.

The retired Major General of the TNI explained that the ammunition that was detonated was expired ammunition which was technically unstable. With this condition, he assessed that all of the ammunition expired would not have exploded simultaneously when it was detonated.

"Some exploded immediately, but some exploded recently because of their abnormal nature," he added.

Hasanuddin also hopes that this event will be a valuable lesson to improve ammunition destruction procedures, especially those that have expired, so that similar incidents do not happen again in the future.

Meanwhile, the TNI confirmed that 13 people, including four TNI soldiers, died as a result of an expired ammunition explosion in Sagara Village, Cibalong, Garut Regency. All fatalities who died immediately were evacuated to Pameungpeuk Hospital for autopsy and burial of bodies.
