Head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) Komjen Martinus Hukom emphasized that drug users who report voluntarily to get rehabilitation will not be subject to criminal sanctions.
This statement was made by Martinus while attending an anti-drug declaration in Boncos Village, Palmerah, West Jakarta, Thursday, May 8.
He said that there were still many users who were reluctant to report for fear of being punished or negative stigma by the social environment.
"The law or the narcotics law stipulates that users must be rehabilitated. If they report, they will not be punished. So please write down: they will not be punished if people report," said Martinus as quoted by Antara.
According to him, in addition to fear of the law, users are also afraid of being ostracized by the public if they recognize addiction and ask for help.
"The public's stigma towards drug users is very negative. As a result they are marginalized," he said.
Martinus also appealed to the public to be more sensitive to those closest to them who are indicated to use drugs. He ensured that if they were reported voluntarily, they would get free rehabilitation services from BNN.
"Don't be afraid if there are children, relatives, neighbors, friends who use drugs. Just report. BNN has free rehabilitation services," he said.
