MATARAM - The Mataram City Health Office (Dinkes), West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), has begun to intensify the movement to eradicate mosquito nests (PSN) after it rains as a preventive measure to tackle Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF).

This step was taken as part of innovation in preventing dengue fever, not in response to the spike in cases.

The head of the Mataram City Health Office, dr. H. Emirald Isfihan, explained that the post-rain PSN movement is important to anticipate the emergence of puddles in the home environment which can become a breeding ground for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which causes dengue fever.

"This is our innovation, turning our approach from reactive to preventive, namely prevention before the case," Emirald said in Mataram, Antara, Friday, April 25.

Although the number of dengue cases in Mataram City was recorded at around 150 cases cumulatively, dr. Emirald emphasized that this effort was more focused on prevention.

The PSN movement was carried out in 1-2 days after the rain, involving the community to actively check and clean up the potential places for breeding mosquitoes, such as used containers that were inundated with water.

Each family is advised to have a Jentik Monitoring Officer (Jumantik) in charge of ensuring that there are no mosquito larvae around the house. In addition, a team from the puskesmas will assist residents in PSN activities to ensure this program runs effectively.

The Mataram Health Office also involves students as agents of change by providing education about a clean and healthy lifestyle, as well as how to prevent dengue fever. Junior high school/equivalent students were chosen because they were considered capable enough to spread this information in their respective families.

"Junior high school students who have been provided with material about PSN and a clean lifestyle at school, we hope to implement it at home," added dr. Emirald.

To increase the effectiveness of this program, the Mataram Health Office cooperates with the Mataram City Education Office and stipulates SMP Negeri 15 Mataram as a pilot school in implementing a healthy lifestyle and PSN. The hope is that this program can improve the quality of the health of the school environment and educate students and local residents about the importance of living a clean and healthy life.

"We hope that the PSN movement and a clean lifestyle can be applied in other schools and become a culture for the wider community," concluded dr. Emirald.

With this innovative step, it is hoped that Mataram City can avoid the potential for the dengue outbreak and create a healthier environment for its citizens.
