Florida State University Shooting: 2 Killed, 5 Injured, Perpetrator Suspected Of Becoming Deputy's Son

JAKARTA The shooting took place at the campus of Florida State University (FSU), United States, which killed two people and injured five others. FSU Police Chief Jason Trumbower confirmed that the perpetrator was also injured and had been taken to hospital with the victims.

"Two victims died and five others were rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds. We also took the perpetrator to the hospital," Trumbower said in a press conference, quoted by ANTARA, Friday, April 18.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning local time in an open area inside the FSU campus, precisely near the main lecture building. The perpetrator, who was carrying a firearm, started shooting randomly at the crowd. The atmosphere of the campus, which was initially calm, suddenly turned tense.

The campus security immediately responded and secured the scene in a matter of minutes. The perpetrator was successfully paralyzed on the spot and immediately taken to the hospital. The police have not revealed whether the perpetrator was paralyzed by officers or injured himself.

According to Leon County Sheriff Walter McNeil, the perpetrator is known to be an active student at the FSU and is 20 years old. Surprisingly, the perpetrator is the son of one of sheriff Leon County's deputies.

"He is the son of Deputy Sheriff Leon County who has served for more than 18 years," McNeil said. "Unfortunately, the perpetrator has access to one of his father's weapons, and the weapon was found at the scene."

Trumbower added that the two victims who died were not FSU students. However, there has been no further information regarding the identities of the victims.

Currently, the motive for the shooting is still under investigation. The police have not released details about the reason the perpetrator carried out the action or whether he has a history of mental disorders.

The university expressed deep condolences for this incident and stated that it would increase security in all campus areas. FSU also provides counseling services for students and staff who are psychologically affected.
