JAKARTA - The Indonesian House of Representatives condemns the violence perpetrated by the Myanmar military junta against civilians, especially after the 7.7 Richter-scale earthquake that rocked the country. The House of Representatives also initiated an emergency resolution related to Myanmar at the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly held in Uzbekistan.
Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives' Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP), Irine Yusiana Roba Putri, said the Indonesian House of Representatives voiced criticism of the violence perpetrated by the Myanmar military junta in the ASEAN+3 geopolitical group meeting. This agenda started the 150th General Session which took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on April 5-9, 2025.
"We urge the Myanmar military junta to immediately stop all forms of violence against civilians, especially when people are trying to survive the impact of the earthquake," said Irine, Monday, April 7.
Irine expressed deep concern from the Indonesian House of Representatives over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Myanmar. His party then initiated an emergency resolution proposal with a number of ASEAN state parliaments.
"Therefore, the Indonesian House of Representatives invites the parliament of ASEAN countries present at this General Assembly to submit an emergency resolution regarding Myanmar," continued the member of the PDI-P (PDIP) faction.
At this world parliamentary forum, the delegation of the Indonesian House of Representatives together with the parliament of Thailand, Laos, Philippines and Malaysia also initiated an emergency item entitled Parliamentary diplomacy to promote peace and address the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar.
Irine said the proposed emergency resolution received broader support in the Asia Pacific geopolitical group, with Canada joining as co-sponsors.
Myanmar's military junta announced a temporary ceasefire on Wednesday, April 2. Ceasefires were announced amid efforts to recover after the earthquake and the death toll continues to rise. The military government said it would comply with the ceasefire from April 6 to April 22 to facilitate earthquake relief efforts.
Human rights groups and foreign governments have criticized the military junta for still launching airstrikes even though Myanmar's situation has not been conducive to a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that killed nearly 3 thousand people.
Therefore, Irine also emphasized the importance of parliament's role in strengthening humanitarian diplomacy. He emphasized that repressive actions should not be taken.
