COVID-19 Cases In Riau Go Crazy, Almost Twofold Increase

JAKARTA - Riau Province has recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 cases since the pandemic during April 2021, when cases of the new type of coronavirus infection in the region almost doubled.

Data from the Riau Provincial Health Office in Pekanbaru, Tuesday, showed that during April 2021, there were 7,556 cases of COVID-19, almost double the 3,355 cases recorded in the previous month.

The addition of COVID-19 cases in April 2021 exceeded the increase in the highest number of cases in Riau in October 2020 which recorded 7,176 cases.

Riau during the period October 2020 to April 2021 had the lowest increase in the number of cases in February 2021 with 2,423 cases.

After that, the number of cases continued to rise with an average increase of more than 200 cases per day. The highest addition of daily cases occurred on Monday, April 26, with 614 new cases.

As of April 27, 2021, the accumulative number of people who have contracted COVID-19 in Riau is 42,135 people with 37,062 people who have recovered and 1,038 people who have died.

"We are increasingly worried about the increasing number of positive cases of COVID-19. On Monday, the number increased by 614, and this is the highest during the COVID-19 pandemic in Riau", said Head of the Riau Health Service, Mimi Yuliani Nazir, as reported by Antara, Tuesday, April 27.

"Now there are still many people who are not disciplined towards health protocols. It is time for the people of Riau to be alert to the spread of positive cases", he added.

According to him, in the past week the increase in COVID-19 cases exceeded 400 cases.

He said that contact tracing was carried out on residents who were positively infected with the corona virus, both from the family cluster and the cluster of travelers.

"Cases are increasing from the results of tracing contacts carried out by about 15 people. If that number of 400 cases are detected, of course there are many cases", he said.

"But later there will be a decrease after the tracing results are completed. So (from) the previous cases are detected now. This could be 400 from the start and then happened", he continued.
