Mount Marapi West Sumatra Eruption This Morning, PVMBG Asks Climbers To Stay 3 Km Away From Verbeek Crater

JAKARTA - The Gunung Marapi Volcano Observation Post (PGA) noted that the volcanic eruption in Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra Province (West Sumatra) lasted about 45 seconds.

"There was an eruption of Mount Marapi on March 16, 2025 at 07.00 WIB with a column of ash height of about 800 meters above the peak," said PGA Gunung Marapi Teguh officer in Padang, Sunday, March 16, which was confiscated by Antara.

Based on the records of the local PGA, the ash column due to the eruption was observed to be gray with thick intensity leaning towards the north.

The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.4 millimeters (mm) and lasted about 45 seconds.

Meanwhile, a resident of Nagari Canduang, Ampek Angkek District, Agam Regency, Noviardi said the eruption of the 2,891 meter volcano above sea level (masl) had worried residents.

"Residents at my residence had time to leave the house, because the explosion this time was quite harsh from the previous incident," said Noviardi.

Currently, the volcanic activity of Mount Marapi is at Level II or Alert. PVMBG issued a number of recommendations from the community, climbers, or visitors, asked not to enter or carry out activities within a radius of 3 kilometers (km) from the eruption center (Kawah Verbeek) of Mount Marapi.

In addition, PVMBG urges people living around valleys, rivers or banks whose water originates at the top of Mount Marapi, to always be aware of the potential threat of rain lava floods that can occur, especially during the rainy season.
