JAKARTA - Starbucks coffee shop employees in South Korea have received an award from the country's fire and emergency rescue agency after successfully saving a customer's life.
The Gimpo Fire Department in Gyeonggi Province last Thursday presented a special award, under the leadership of the fire department, to three Starbucks employees at Pungmu Station DT in Gimpo.
The employees received the award after an incident on January 26, when a Starbucks customer suddenly fell to the floor while waiting in line to order.
Ha Hyo-jin, the shop supervisor who was taking the order, wasted no time in helping the customer who was starting to lose consciousness. Ha then performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
The employee's emergency response took less than eight seconds, Starbucks Korea said as quoted by The Korea Times on March 11.
Jung Tae-woo, the shop's deputy manager, then called Korea's emergency number and, together with Park Ji-hoon, another supervisor who had just arrived for his shift, continued CPR on the customer.
The three continued to work until emergency crews arrived eight minutes later.
A firefighter emergency crew member said the Starbucks employee “perfectly performed CPR, applying repeated chest compressions as appropriate,” in the golden hour — the first four to five minutes after the patient begins to lose consciousness.
“The patient was in ventricular fibrillation when we took over,” said Lim Ji-seong, a firefighter emergency crew member.
Ventricular fibrillation is better known as arrhythmia, or an irregular heartbeat.
“We used an external defibrillator on the patient three times and saw the heart rhythm return to normal. If the initial life-saving emergency manual had been kept, the chances of saving a life would have increased significantly,” Lim added.
Firefighters said they would recommend Park as a Heart Saver, as Heart Saver Korea calls him.

They added that because Park performed CPR on the patient for six minutes before emergency crews arrived, he allowed the patient to restore his heart rhythm and regain consciousness and full control of bodily functions within the first 72 hours or longer after being taken to the hospital — a requirement for the title.
Meanwhile, Starbucks Korea said it regularly holds safety education sessions at the workplace and provides an emergency life-saving manual.
It added that the company trains employees on the steps necessary to serve customers, including CPR.
