JAKARTA - Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology (Mendiktisaintek) Brian Yuliarto emphasized the government's commitment to making universities a center for research and innovation in order to build national industrial independence.
In a historic meeting attended by President Prabowo Subianto along with hundreds of rectors from various state universities (PTN) and the private sector (PTS), Brian revealed that the government allocated Rp2 trillion for research sourced from the State Budget, LPDP, and industrial cooperation.
"This is not just a ceremonial meeting, but an important milestone in joint efforts to make universities a center for innovation and superior human resources printers. We want Indonesia to be equal to developed and out of the middle income trap," Brian said in his remarks reported by ANTARA, Thursday, March 13.
In addition to research funds, said Brian, the government also plans to improve the quality of lecturers by increasing their doctoral graduates.
He said that currently Indonesia has 4,416 universities, consisting of 125 state universities, 2,812 private universities, 1,309 religious universities, and 170 Regional V Higher Education Service Institutions.
Meanwhile, the number of active students throughout Indonesia reached 9.967 million, with a total of 303.067 lecturers teaching at various universities.
Brian explained that based on the latest data, only 25 percent of the total lecturers have completed their doctoral education. Therefore, the government will make the increase in the number of doctoral graduates as one of the priority programs of the Ministry of Education and Technology.
It was emphasized that the government's commitment to allocate salaries and allowances worth IDR 18.7 trillion for more than 303,000 lecturers in Indonesia.
Not only that, but the government also launched the Garuda School program, which this year will be present in four locations as the nation's best talent development center.

As part of the commitment to increase access to higher education, the government has allocated Rp15.43 trillion for scholarships of more than 1 million students, ensuring that higher education can be reached by all levels of society.
