Hipotermia, Two Climbers Died At The Top Of The Carstensz Pyramids

JAKARTA - Two climbers named Lilie Wijayanti Poegiono and Elsa Laksono died while climbing Puncak Jaya, Papua, or the Carstensz Pyramid.

The two victims died on their way down from Puncak Carstensz Pyramid to Base Camp, Lembah Kuning on Saturday, March 1, yesterday.

"When the trip down from Puncak Cartenz due to the bad weather, it caused Hypotermia. 3 climbers who survived were trapped and forced to spend the night in an area near the peak until the next day the rescue team arrived," wrote the official statement of PT Tropical Cartenz Jaya, Sunday, March 2.

Regarding the chronology, it started when 20 climbers departed to carry out a Summit from Base Camp Yello Valley to Puncak Carstenz on Friday, February 28, at 04.00 WIT.

Then on Friday, February 28, at 14.00 WIT the last climber reached Puncak Cartenz. Then at 19.30 WIT, the climbers began to descend. However, there was 1 climber, Indira was exposed to symptoms of Hypotermia in the area near the peak as the journey dropped.

Furthermore, the local guide, Yustinus Sondegau tried to climb up to reach the point where the survivors were on the ridge Summit on Friday (2/3) at 21.48 WIT.

Witness Yustinus brought emergency assistance (sleeping bag), fly sheet, hot water and radio). However, this effort was stopped on the big terrace because the weather got worse and on the way down Yustinus met Luddy and accompanied Luddy to Base Camp.
