In The Presence Of US President Biden, Jokowi Stressed That Indonesia Is Very Serious About Controlling Climate Change

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo said that Indonesia is very serious about improving and controlling the impacts of climate change.

This was conveyed by Jokowi in the Leaders Summit on Climate forum initiated by United States President Joe Biden.

The summit (summit) which was held virtually was attended by a number of state leaders. This forum discusses the current climate change.

"Indonesia is very serious in controlling climate change and invites the world to take concrete actions, to lead by example," Jokowi said in a speech broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat Youtube, Thursday, April 22.

As the largest archipelagic country and owner of tropical forests, Jokowi said addressing climate change is Indonesia's national interest through empowerment policies and law enforcement.

In fact, Jokowi said that the rate of deforestation or deforestation in Indonesia had fallen, the lowest in twenty years.

"The halt in the conversion of natural forests and peatlands reached 66 million hectares, wider than the combined area of England and Norway. The reduction in forest fires was up to 82 percent while several regions in America, Australia and Europe experienced the widest increase," he explained.

Jokowi said that currently Indonesia has updated its nationally determined contribution (NDC) to increase adaptation capacity and climate resilience. In order to achieve the target of the Paris agreement and the next common agenda, Jokowi views that the global partnership must be strengthened.

"We have to build an understanding, we have to build a strategy to achieve net zero emission, and towards UNFCCC COP29 Glasgow," he said.

In addition, Jokowi showed off that Indonesia was accelerating net zero emission pilot pilots. Among other things, by building the Indonesia Green Industrial Park covering an area of 12,500 hectares in North Kalimantan, which will become the largest in the world.

The Indonesian government is also rehabilitating 620 thousand hectares of mangrove forests until 2024. This figure is the largest in the world with carbon absorption reaching four times that of tropical forests.

"Indonesia is open to investment and technology transfer, including investment for energy transition. Great opportunities are also open for the development of biofuels, the lithium battery industry and electric vehicles," said Jokowi.

"Indonesia also continues to support the efforts of our friends in the Pacific region. We must continue to take collective action, a real global partnership, and not blame each other, let alone apply trade barriers under the pretext of environmental issues," he concluded.
