Meeting With Foreign Minister Sugiono, The Head Of UN Human Rights Supports Indonesia's Full Role In The Settlement Of The Issues Of Myanmar And Rohingya

JAKARTA - The head of UN human rights expressed full support for Indonesia to play a role in resolving the issue of Myanmar and Rohingya together with ASEAN.

That was said by Volker Turk when meeting with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono on the sidelines of a meeting of the High-Level Segment of the UN Human Rights Council (Dewan HAM) for the 58th Session in Geneva, Switzerland, Monday.

In a statement, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, the UN High Commissioner (KT) expressed his views on the impact of the current global dynamics on the human rights agenda at the global level, recording and appreciating Indonesia's progress through the National Strategy for Business and Human Rights.

KT HAM also expressed hope that Indonesia could continue to play an important role in encouraging the promotion of human rights, good governance and respect for the principles of the UN Charter.

"In particular, KT HAM also hopes that ASEAN can play a more role in efforts to resolve the Myanmar issue and fully support Indonesia's role in this matter, including in handling the Rohingya issue," said the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement as quoted on Tuesday, February 15.

"KT HAM offers its readiness to contribute to the handling of the human rights situation in Myanmar," added the ministry.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono told the Head of UN Human Rights that human rights issues are one of the priorities of the Indonesian Government.

"The Indonesian government has made the issue of human rights one of the priority issues," said Foreign Minister Sugiono.

Foreign Minister Sugiono also explained various policies of President Prabowo's government in the context of fulfilling human rights in Indonesia, including the Free Nutrition Food program, education and the construction of 3 million people's homes, especially for people in rural areas.

"Indonesia even now has one Minister who has a specific focus on dealing with human rights issues," added Foreign Minister Sugiono.
