JAKARTA - United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Monday countries should work to end the Russian-Ukraine war, calling for a just and lasting peace, during Russia's three-year invasion of Ukraine.
"We must mobilize all efforts to end this conflict, and achieve a just and lasting peace in accordance with the UN Charter, international law, and General Assembly resolution," he told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.
This was conveyed by the Secretary General of Guterres ahead of the UN General Assembly meeting on Ukraine on Monday in New York, United States.
The US urged the General Assembly to support its resolution, which it said focused on ending the war, pitting it against a countertext by Ukraine and European allies. The proposal reiterated UN demands for Russia to withdraw its troops and stop hostilities.
While in his tweet on social media X Secretary General Guterres wrote, reaffirming the need for equitable, sustainable and comprehensive peace, upholding Ukraine's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within internationally recognized limits, in accordance with the UN Charter, international law, and General Assembly resolution.
"Since the first day of the war, the United Nations has stood in full solidarity with the Ukrainian people, providing life-saving humanitarian assistance to millions of people in need and supporting recovery and long-term reconstruction efforts," Secretary General Guterres tweeted.
Secretary General Guterres added that the war in Ukraine poses a serious threat not only to European peace and security, but also to the foundations and basic principles of the United Nations.
"That's enough. After three years of death and destruction, I once again called for urgent de-escalation and immediately ended hostilities," he exclaimed.
"I welcome all efforts to achieve a just and inclusive peace. The United Nations is ready to support these efforts," he concluded.
