JAKARTA - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said US drone flights over Mexico were a collaboration with the US government. Mexico insists nothing is illegal about this.

"There is cooperation," Sheinbaum said at a regular press conference reported by Reuters, Wednesday, February 19.

"This flight is part of a coordinated operation between the US and Mexican governments, and has been carried out for years," he added.

Sheinbaum also said the international agency's legal framework fighting crime in Mexico was being evaluated.

His remarks come amid tensions over relations after US President Donald Trump vowed to designate a Mexican drug cartel as a terrorist organization as part of his efforts to stop the arrival of synthetic opioid fentanyl in his country.

On Wednesday, the US designated several cartels as global terrorist organizations, according to a US Federal Register notice.

A US official said the drone's flight was under an agreement with the Mexican government and the plane was unarmed. Their mission is to find a fentanyl laboratory.
