Mount Marapi Eruption Again, Abu Colon Not Observed

The Volcano Observation Post (PGA) of Mount Marapi, Bukittinggi City, West Sumatra (West Sumatra), reported that the volcano erupted again on Wednesday night at 20.31 WIB. However, the ash column was not observed.

"There was an eruption of Mount Marapi at 20.31 WIB, but the height of the ash column was not observed," said PGA Gunung Marapi Teguh officer as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, February 19.

The volcanic eruption, which is located in Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency, was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.7 millimeters and a duration of about 54 seconds. A number of residents also reported that the eruption of 2.891 meters above sea level (MDPL) was accompanied by the sound of eruptions to vibrations.

Based on data from PGA Bukittinggi, three eruptions of Mount Marapi were recorded on Wednesday. The first eruption occurred at 02.45 WIB with a column height of ash observed about 500 meters above the peak.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity leaning towards the north.

This eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 13.9 millimeters and a duration of about 26 seconds.

Then, at 07.10 WIB the mountain erupted again and threw volcanic ash as high as 700 meters.

Currently, the volcanic activity of Mount Marapi has Level II (Alert) status. PVMBG issued a number of recommendations including the community, climbers, or visitors being asked not to enter or carry out activities within a radius of three kilometers from the eruption center (verbeek area) of Mount Marapi.

In addition, PVMBG also urges people living around valleys, rivers or banks whose water originates at the top of Mount Marapi to always be aware of the potential threat of rain lava floods that can occur, especially during the rainy season.
