JAKARTA - Chairman of the Indonesian Parliament, Puan Maharani, assessed that the active role of Indonesian women is very important in enhancing the literacy culture, especially from the family sphere as a provision for realizing the progress of the Indonesian nation.
"Literacy is a fundamental ability that can become a foundation for a person to bring a better life for himself and for many people," said Puan in a talkshow commemorating Kartini Day which was held virtually by the National Library (Perpusnas), Tuesday, April 20.
He said, the family is the smallest community unit but plays a big role in the progress of a nation because the family is the starting point of a person's life, and the role of women is very large in the family.
Puan assessed that if literacy culture has been instilled from an early age at the family level, then they will grow up with a strong literacy culture.
"When the culture of reading at home becomes a habit, children will get used to using books or reading material as a reference for information," he said.
Puan said literacy skills such as reading, writing, as well as processing and understanding information, enable a person to absorb so much knowledge.
In addition, according to him, he can express ideas and think critically, as well as have problem solving skills.
"If RA Kartini does not have literacy skills, then there will be no book 'After the Darkness of the Light' which has inspired many Kartini-Kartini across generations to date," he said.
The PDI-P politician understands that efforts to improve literacy culture is not an easy task, especially since many mothers have two roles, as housewives and at the same time working.
However, she believes that Indonesian women must be creative, have lots of ideas, and can find ways to increase the literacy culture at the family level, as well as in other close social circles.
"Put a tough problem in front of Indonesian women, then God willing, women can find a solution," he said.
