Landslide in Pekalongan Claims 11 Victims, 15 Others Declared Missing

JAKARTA - Heavy rain with high intensity accompanied by strong winds since January 21-22 morning caused a landslide that killed 11 residents in Petungkriono District, Pekalongan Regency, Central Java.

"Yes, a major landslide in Petungkriono, 11 people have died and 15 people have not been found," said Pekalongan Regent Fadia Arafiq in Pekalongan, Tuesday, January 21, as quoted by Antara.

According to him, flash floods that occurred in several sub-districts have caused landslides, but the worst was in Petungkriono District.

Currently, he said, the Pekalongan Regency Government (Pemkab) is evacuating disaster victims at the disaster location.

"However, due to the difficult-to-reach conditions of the area and the roads being cut off, we ask the central government and the Central Java Provincial Government to help with this disaster. We were forced to go around to the disaster location through neighboring areas," he said.

Fadia Arafiq said that his party would propose an Extraordinary Event (KLB) related to the disaster.

Pekalongan Regency Regional Representative Council (DPRD) Chairman Munir said that his party expressed condolences to the families of the victims who died in Petungkriono District.

His party also expressed gratitude to the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) officers and the Pekalongan Regent who immediately acted to evacuate the victims.

"We express our gratitude to Basarnas, BPBD, TNI/Polri, and volunteers who evacuated the victims at 00.00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) (Tuesday morning). We ask all parties to be prepared for this disaster and residents who are in the river to move locations," he said.
