JAKARTA - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hopes to establish active and mutually beneficial cooperation with the new United States government while congratulating President Donald Trump on Monday's inauguration.

He also praised the opportunity to achieve a just peace in his country, after battling the Russian invasion for nearly three years.

"President Trump has always been firm, and the peace policy through powers he announced provides an opportunity to strengthen American leadership and achieve long-term and fair peace, which is a top priority," President Zelensky wrote on X.

President Trump is known to have repeatedly called for a ceasefire and has pledged to end the war immediately, even though he did not say how.

Ukraine sees close ties with the upcoming Trump Administration as its main goal of making an approach to Republican politicians after its victory in the US general election in November.

President Zelensky said on Monday Ukraine was looking forward to active and "profitless" cooperation with the Trump administration.

"We are stronger together, and we can provide greater security, stability and economic growth for the world and our two countries," he added.

Speaking later in his evening video address, President Zelensky described Trump as a "strong man" who was able to provide the push needed to move forward with efforts to achieve peace.

"This is an opportunity that must be taken advantage of," he said.
