JAKARTA - Venezuela's opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, has called for a boycott of the 2025 Venezuelan Legislative Election (Pileg).
This boycott is related to the assumption that the results of the 2024 Venezuelan presidential election are not democratic following allegations of theft by one of the candidates, Nicolas Maduro, who has been appointed head of state.
Maduro's claim to win the 2024 Venezuelan presidential election which was held on July 28, 2024 was also denied by the international community. According to the opposition, the victory should be in the presidential candidate who is a competitor to Maduro,ko Gonzalez Urrutia.
"Doing the vote repeatedly without respecting the results is not defending (the right to) choose, it distorts people's wishes," Machado said in a video published on social media, quoted from AFP, Monday, January 20.
The 2025 Venezuelan legislative election which will be held simultaneously with the regional head elections (pilkada) for governors and mayors is scheduled to take place this year. However, the exact date of the vote has not yet been determined.
There has been no determination on the date of the 2025 Pilleg and Pilkada in Venezuela because the United States, European Union, G7, and several neighboring countries refused to admit Maduro's claim to win the 2024 Venezuelan presidential election.
Maduro was inaugurated as President of Venzuela on January 10, 2025, with a term of service of up to six years.
The 62-year-old man's inauguration is in the midst of the United States (US) offering a prize of US$25 million for anyone who managed to capture Maduro.
