JAKARTA - Public policy observer Trubus Rahadiansyah assesses that the existence of a sea fence on the coast of Tangerang (Banten), Bekasi (West Java) to North Jakarta, reflects the weak supervision, both from the central government, especially the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and local governments.

"These hashtags have been built since the era of the previous government and are allowed to develop. Some of these fences arise due to fear of canceling permits," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, January 18.

The existence of the sea fence, he continued, clearly harms the fishermen operating around the area.

On the other hand, Trubus also highlighted the damage to coral reef ecosystems where fish live due to the construction of the bamboo fence.

Although a number of parties stated that the construction of the sea fence had gone through an analysis process regarding the environmental impact (AMDAL), Trubus criticized its implementation which did not go according to plan.

"The government is more focused on tax and levy aspects, while the environmental and welfare issues of fishermen get less attention," Trubus said.

He also appreciated the steps taken by the central government and local governments to seal the location of the fence and ensure that there was no continuation of the construction of the sea fence.

However, according to him, the steps taken are still short-term. He urged an effective solution, including sanctions for those who built the sea fence.

"The long-term solution must be clear, namely to stop the construction of these fences and impose sanctions on the makers," he said.

Trubus also encouraged the government to balance business interests with the sustainability of the ecosystem and the economy of coastal communities. Moreover, environmental-based development policies are currently one of the priorities in the midst of climate change conditions.

"The policies taken must be in favor of the fishing community and the environment, not on business interests that are vulnerable to causing violations," he said.

He hopes that the government can focus more on policies that support the sustainability of the environment and welfare of fishermen so that marine development in Indonesia can run sustainably and benefit all parties.
