HMPV Virus Enters Indonesia, MPR Leader Asks Ministry Of Health Not To Consider Its Enteng Spread

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairperson of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) from the PAN faction, Eddy Soeparno, asked the Ministry of Health to remain vigilant about the spread as well as the impact of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) virus which recently spread in China and was reported to have entered Indonesia.

Eddy urged the Ministry of Health not to take the spread of the virus lightly by taking early anticipation. Moreover, it was recorded that all cases found involved children.

"The point is to remain vigilant and as much as possible prevent all forms of HMPV spread. There needs to be measurable anticipation and not take it lightly. Moreover, learning from COVID-19 cases, we understand that the immunity of each individual is different," said Eddy in his statement, Saturday, January 11.

The Deputy PAN emphasized that the health ministry and related parties must continue to prioritize public safety as the main principle. Not to mention, said Eddy, the government is still debating whether this virus is dangerous or not.

"The priority is public safety. Moreover, the impact of a disease can be different from one person to another. So in my opinion, rather than dangerous or harmless debates, it is much better to provide measurable policies to prevent its spread," said Eddy.

In addition to prevention issues, Eddy assessed that the government also needs to prepare special health care facilities if later the HMPV virus turns out to be spreading out of control.

"Don't wait for hospitals or clinics to be full in the area, then the health service facilities will be prepared. There is nothing wrong with preparing because once again, public safety is the main thing," said this member of the Indonesian Parliament for the electoral district of Bogor City and Cianjur, West Java.
