TRENGGALEK - More than 200 cattle in Trenggalek Regency, East Java were reported to have contracted the PMK (mouth disease and nails) outbreak with 10 of them dying due to deteriorating conditions and not being treated immediately.

Head of the Veterinary Animal Health and Public Health Division of the Trenggalek Regency Livestock Service, Ririn Hari Setiani, Tuesday, revealed that a significant increase in PMK cases had occurred since the end of December 2024.

"In the last week of 2024, 79 livestock were infected with FMD. All have been treated, but the cure rate has not reached 100 percent," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, January 7.

Of that number, 15 recovered, three were forcibly cut, five were sold, three were dead, and 53 were still sick.

However, the number of cases jumped again in early 2025 with an additional 156 new cases.

"A total of nine recovered, two were forcibly cut, six were sold, seven died, and 132 were still sick," he explained.

Thus, the total number of PMK cases in Trenggalek reached 235, consisting of 24 recovered, five forcibly cut, 11 sold, and 185 sick.

Ririn added that his party continues to intensify education to prevent the spread of PMK while waiting for the distribution of vaccines from the Ministry of Agriculture and the provincial government.

"Regional budgets for vaccination are very limited, so we rely on vaccine assistance from the central and provincial governments. Meanwhile, we urge farmers to carry out independent vaccinations if possible," he said.

Another preventive measure taken is to tighten supervision of livestock traffic in the Trenggalek area.

Farmers are also advised to be more selective in buying livestock by ensuring complete documents such as animal health certificates, veterinary certificates, and proof of vaccination.

"Farmers must ensure that the livestock purchased are not directly combined with other animals. Separate for 14 days in separate cages to prevent potential transmission," he concluded.
