Flash Floods In North Morowali: 1 Death Toll, 2 Injuries

JAKARTA The flash flood carrying material in the form of tree trunks hit North Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi. This incident occurred in Soyo Jaya District, precisely in Tamainusi Village, and swept away a basecamp belonging to a private company located on the riverbank.

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, said that the flash flood caused one victim to die and two people were injured.

"The victims who died were Samsul Alam, a resident of Lemba Village, Sumara. In addition, two other people suffered minor injuries, namely Hasna, a stocker, and Satria, a heavy equipment operator from an affected company," Abdul said in his statement on Monday, January 6.

The material losses suffered by the company due to this disaster are still in the process of being collected by the authorities.

The Joint Team consisting of BPBD North Morowali Regency, TNI, and Polri was immediately dispatched to the scene to evacuate victims and emergency handling. BPBD North Morowali Regency has also conducted rapid assessments and assessments of the impact of this disaster.

In addition, BPBD is coordinating with village officials, the Rapid Response Team (TRC), and the local police chief to speed up the evacuation process and clean up the affected locations. Currently, the flood has receded, and flood material cleaning is ongoing.

"The victim who suffered minor injuries has received treatment at the nearest Puskesmas. Meanwhile, the previously disturbed Soyojaya Kolonodale Street access has now returned to normal and can be passed," explained Abdul.

BNPB appealed to people in disaster-prone areas, especially around rivers and hill slopes, to increase awareness of potential extreme weather, including heavy rains that risk triggering flash floods.

The public is asked to always monitor weather information from related agencies and follow directions from the authorities to avoid future disaster risks.
