BMKG: Beware Of Potential Extreme Weather In Central Java On 9-11 December 2024

SEMARANG The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to people in various regions of Central Java (Central Java) to increase awareness of the potential for extreme weather which is expected to occur from 9 to 11 December 2024.

"Based on the analysis of atmospheric dynamics released by the BMKG of the Ahmad Yani Semarang Meteorological Station this morning, a number of factors affected the potential for extreme weather in Central Java," said Teguh Wardoyo, Head of the BMKG Technician Group at the Tunggul Wulung Meteorological Station, quoted from ANTARA.

Teguh explained that one of the main causes of this extreme weather is the active phenomenon of Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO), namely large-scale atmospheric circulation around the equatorial region. Currently, MJO is in phase 5, which triggers the formation of convective clouds in the territory of Indonesia, including Central Java.

In addition, the cyclonic pattern detected in the south of Sumatra and East Nusa Tenggara also affected air mass gatherings, wind slowdown, and wind direction. This condition has the potential to increase the chances of extreme weather in a number of areas.

"The high humidity in various atmospheric layers also supports the growth of rain clouds to the upper layers," Teguh added.

He also explained that atmospheric conditions in Central Java tend to be unstable, plus warm sea surface temperatures in the Java Sea, increase water evaporation. This contributes to the formation of significant rain clouds.

"This condition has the potential to cause extreme weather in the form of rain with moderate to heavy intensity, accompanied by lightning and strong winds in several areas of Central Java," he concluded.

The public is advised to always monitor the latest information from the BMKG and take anticipatory steps to reduce the impact that may occur due to extreme weather.
