Mount Semeru Several Eruptions Thursday Night

The LuMAJANG - Mount Semeru was recorded several times as an eruption with an eruption as high as 300 meters to 600 meters above the peak.

"There was an eruption of Mount Semeru at 21:29 WIB with an eruption column height of about 600 meters above the peak or 4,276 meters above the peak," said Mount Semeru Observation Post Officer, Liswanto, as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, December 5.

According to him, the ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity to the southwest. When the report was made, the eruption was still ongoing.

Previously, the eruption of Mount Semeru occurred at 21.09 WIB with an eruptive column height of about 300 meters above the peak and a column of ash was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity to the southwest.

"When the report was made, the eruption was still ongoing. The previous eruption also occurred at 20.59 WIB with an eruptive column height of about 400 meters above the peak," he said.

Based on officers' records, Mount Semeru experienced an eruption 11 times on Thursday from 00.44 WIB to 21.29 WIB, but it is predicted that the eruption will continue along with the status of the active mountain at the alert level.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) provides a number of recommendations, namely that people are prohibited from carrying out any activities in the southeast sector, along Besuk Kobokan as far as eight kilometers from the peak of the eruption.

Furthermore, outside of this distance, the community is not allowed to carry out activities at a distance of 500 meters from the riverbank along Besuk Kobokan, because it has the potential to be affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 13 kilometers from the summit.

"People are also not allowed to move within a radius of three kilometers from the crater/peak of Mount Semeru, because they are prone to the dangers of lightning," said Liswanto.
