JAKARTA - The insurgent group in Syria has reportedly managed to control several areas in Aleppo, Syria's second-largest city.

As of Friday evening, reported by the BBC and Reuters on Saturday, November 30, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) stated that the rebels had taken control of more than half of the city.

This is the largest attack on the Syrian government in recent years and the first time the rebels have fought President Bashar al-Assad's troops have reached Aleppo since being forced out by a joint army of the government, Russia, and Iran in 2016.

Videos posted on the affiliated channel of Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) show insurgent fighters in inner-city vehicles.

Meanwhile, government forces said they had reclaimed positions in a number of cities in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib, following attacks launched by HTS and its allied factions on Wednesday.

The Syrian government, with the help of Russia and other allies, then recaptured most of the lost territory. Idlib, the opposition's last bastion, was largely controlled by HTS, but the insurgent factions backed by Turkey and Turkish forces were also based there.
